July 2009

Once again, I  am taking part in the Cambridge Open Studios. I will be opening during Weekends 1 and 2 (4th/5th and 11th/12th July). Apart from having prints for sale, I will be demonstrating wood engraving and printing from engraved blocks in my Albion Handpresses.

You can see my blog entry about last years event here.

You are very welcome to come and see what I get up to - no pressure to buy - I always enjoy meeting visitors.

After the Open Studios, I am off to Chicago as guest artist at the annual workshop of the Wood Engravers' Network

I am working on several illustration projects this year. The first project was  "Freshly Picked", a new cookery book by Jojo Tulloh. More recentl6y, I have completed several illustrations for and extract from "Northern Lights" by Philip Pullman. Later this year I am working on a series of illustrations for a new edition of Charles Duckens' "A Christmas Carol", These have been commissioned by Susan Hill, who has written a new introduction for this edition.

As a result, I cannot take on quite so many bookplate commissions but I am leaving spaces for them in my calendar and fitting them in as I can.

2009 Events

I will be opening my studio for the 2009 Cambridge Open Studios in July  and, later in the year, showing and demonstrating at Ashon, near Saffron Walden. In November, I will be at the Biennial Fine Press Book Fair in Oxford with at least one new book. I will add links to these events shortly.

Andy English: Wood  Engravings 1991 - 2006 at the Three Cups Gallery

The evening of Thursday, 24th August saw a very successful opening of my exhibition at the Three Cups Gallery in Ely, Cambridgeshire, UK. It was well attended with many sales.

This a small retrospective exhibition of 42 engravings made between 1991 and 2006. All work is for sale and unframed prints may be purchased to take away.

The show continues until 30th September 2006. The gallery, which also serves coffee and lunches, is on Three Cups Walk, which runs between Fore Hill and the Broad Street car park. It is open Monday to Saturday from 10am until 5pm.

The evening started on the terrace:

The Three Cups Gallery is perfect for showing engravings in rooms which are on a domestic scale:

The exhibition starts at the bottom of the stairs and continues upwards.

At the top is a room full of engravings. The gallery is the converted coach house of an old inn. I took this photograph at the end of the evening when I finally had the room to myself.

Out into the darkness... off to find some food.

Do come along and see for yourself if you are in the area.
