Artist’s Statement
Printmaking suits me as I love making multiples; I like the idea that many people can own and share my work. I also love the process of printing an edition - a slow, repeated ritual with its own choreography.
I have tried many types of printmaking but, when I first picked up a graver and engraved on the endgrain of a block of wood, it seemed to me to be much more like remembering a process, rather than learning It. I am very conscious of those who have gone before me - the famous engravers and also the unsung workers who interpreted drawings to illustrate Victorian books and journals.
I was born in the Fenland region and still live here. This area and its wildlife continue to inspire me. Other themes that I have followed over the years are gardens and my own childhood - reflected in that of my own children.
Having taught for over a quarter of a century, I am now engraving full-time. In recent years, much of my output has been commercial work but now I can find the time to explore my own images again, revisiting familiar territory but also exploring new themes.
I have a love of fine press books and I have several illustrating projects in hand. I am planning to design and print my own limited edition books in the future.
My work is unashamedly rural, autobiographical and traditional.
