Artist’s Statement

Printmaking suits me as I love making multiples; I like the idea that many people can own and share my work. I also love the process of printing an edition - a slow, repeated ritual with its own choreography.

I have tried many types of printmaking but when, in 1991,  I first picked up a graver and engraved on the endgrain of a block of wood, it seemed to me to be much more like remembering a process, rather than learning It. I am very conscious of those who have gone before me - the famous engravers and also the unsung workers who interpreted drawings to illustrate Victorian books and journals.

I was born in the Fenland region and still live here. This area and its wildlife continue to inspire me. Other themes that I have followed over the years are gardens and childhood - particularly the "Brothers" Series which features my own children.

I am a full-time, professional engraver, taking on commissions for illustrations, designs for wine labels, images for use on Wedding stationary and, especially, bookplates (ex libris), which are a speciality of mine.

I have a love of fine press and handmade books and occasionally produce my own.

My work is unashamedly rural, autobiographical and traditional.
