Press Release: August 2006
A retrospective exhibition of the work of printmaker Andy English will be on display at the Three Cups Gallery from 25th August until 30th September 2006, celebrating the artist’s fiftieth birthday earlier this year.
Andy works in a very traditional way, engraving his incredibly detailed designs onto woodblocks which are used to print small limited editions using a Victorian handpress in his Little Downham studio.
The exhibition also marks another big event in Andy’s life; he has recently retired from teaching for twenty six years at Chesterton Community College, Cambridge, to concentrate on printmaking and illustration.
Much of Andy’s recent work has been in collaboration with North American private presses, including illustrations for the prestigious Barbarian Press of British Columbia, Canada, who make exquisite books in small limited editions.
Andy also designs and engraves bookplates for book collectors to paste into their volumes. Most of these are for clients in the United States and Europe and, after exhibiting his work in North America, Europe, Africa and Australia, Andy was very pleased to receive an invitation to show his work in Ely at the Three Cups Gallery, on Three Cups Walk, just off Fore Hill.
The exhibition will include works that feature all of Andy’s familiar themes: wildlife, gardens, childhood and the local area.
