ANDY ENGLISH

Andy English was born in Norfolk in 1956. He was educated at Downham Market Grammar School and the Universities of Reading and London. He taught in Cambridge for 26 years but now works full time as an engraver in the Fenlands of Cambridgeshire, UK

Andy started to engrave in the early 1990s and he describes his first steps as being more like remembering the process, rather than learning it. He was elected to the Society of Wood Engravers in 1997. He is also a member of the Cambridge Drawing Society and the Wood Engravers Network (USA).

There are several themes that Andy often visits in his work. These include gardens, local wildlife and childhood. This fits in with his statement that his work is unashamedly rural, autobiographical and traditional. However, expect to find hidden elements and visual puns in his work. His engravings are all printed by the artist, directly from the engraved blocks, in an 1865 Albion Handpress in his studio near Ely.
His work has been exhibited in Europe, North America, Australia and Africa.

In recent years, Andy has devoted much of his time to the design and engraving of bookplates. These have been described in publications in Portugal, France and Austria. This work will continue but there is usually a waiting list.

Andy has illustrated several fine press books, including two (The Eve Of St Agnes; Venus and Adonis) for the prestigious Barbarian Press of British Columbia, Canada. Collaborations with other fine presses are already under way. He has recently illustrated a new poem by Seamus Heaney.
